More than 20,000 desalination plants are operating across 150+ countries and regions. From the shores of the Persian Gulf to the coast of the Bohai Sea in China, desalination is evolving from “a stopgap for arid nations” into strategic infrastructure for global water security.

The Earth Isn’t Short of “Water” — It’s Short of “Fresh Water”

Of all the water on Earth, only about 2.5% is fresh water, and most of it is locked in glaciers and deep aquifers — less than 1% is directly usable by humans. Reverse osmosis (RO), by contrast, uses high-pressure pumps to pressurize seawater above its osmotic pressure, forcing water molecules through a semipermeable membrane while salts are rejected. RO consumes only 3–6 kWh per cubic meter, at a production cost of roughly US$0.45–1.72 per cubic meter — the most cost-effective and widely deployed mainstream technology today. The numbers tell the story best: without an efficient ERD, an RO system can consume 6–8 kWh/m³ or more; with a high-efficiency ERD, specific energy consumption drops to 2.5–3.5 kWh/m³ — a 40%–60% reduction in energy use.
